Raúl Peñaranda
International Advisory Committee – Raúl Peñaranda is a prominent journalist, author, and advocate for freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Bolivia. He is the founder of three newspapers: Nueva Economía and La Época (which are weekly publications) and Página Siete (which is published daily), all of which are among the most influential outlets in the country. In 2018, he founded Brújula Digital, a news website centered on politics and economics. In recognition of his journalism and promotion of freedom of expression, Mr. Peñaranda received Columbia University’s Cabot Award in 2015, the United Nations’ Elizabeth Neuffer Medal (bestowed by former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon) in 2012, and Harvard University’s Nieman Fellowship in 2008. In 2017, he was selected for a fellowship at the National Endowment for Democracy in Washington DC, where he focused on topics related to political authoritarianism. In 2021, he resigned from his role as editor of Brújula Digital to accept a position as a general advisor to Iván Arias, mayor of La Paz.
