No border wall, but more protectionism if Clinton wins

Though there are good reasons for Latin Americans to cheer a Trump defeat in the November 8 US presidential election, a Hillary Clinton presidency will not come at zero cost for Latin America.

The undeniable negative consequences a Donald J Trump victory would have for Mexico in particular and Latin America in general has led many in the region to automatically assume that a Hillary Clinton victory in the race for the White House will bring about improvements in United States-Latin American relations.

Since Clinton has embraced a protectionist discourse, her victory — and an increasingly likely Democratic takeover in the Senate — will also have negative consequences for Latin America in terms of trade and investment opportunities. Though there are good reasons for Latin Americans to cheer a Trump defeat in the November 8 US presidential election, a Hillary Clinton presidency will not come at zero cost for Latin America.
