On Thursday, July 21st, the Security Council of the United Nations had its first vote to narrow down the list of candidates for the next Secretary General. After 70 years of male leaders, many countries are saying the time has come to have female leadership. In this year’s race half of the current candidates are women, and two of them come from Latin America (Susana Malcorra from Argentina and Christiana Figueres from Costa Rica).

Realizing how the historically secretive selection process seems very out of touch today, current Secretary General Ban Ki-moon spearheaded the first ever public debate of the candidates for this year’s selection process. But how could one candidate possibly fulfill the often contradictory expectations of multiple regions around the world? Good thing this pretense of openness is mostly pour la galerie, since the final decision will ultimately be made behind closed doors by the Security Council, with a single candidate presented to the General Assembly for approval.
