“Queen Cristina” is back and ready to fight Macri’s conservative pro-business stance. Less than two years after the end of her presidential term, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has launched a new political party and announced her bid for a Senate seat in October’s mid-term elections. While the chances of coming back are small, she has a whole lot to gain—immunity from the multiple investigations over corruption during her presidency AND another chance to run for the presidency in 2019.
Kirchner’s announcement also comes at a time when candidates all over Latin America are aligning toward various electoral cycles. In Chile, right wing candidates from Chile Vamos held a debate ahead of the July 2nd primaries; while in Argentina, Macri met with Chilean counterpart Michelle Bachelet promising to work on an accord to boost cooperation between the two countries.
