Trump just HAS to have Mexico pay for the wall, or rather he just has to let Americans believe Mexico is paying for the wall—even though it is now pretty clear, they won’t. In aleaked conversation between Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on January 27th, Trump urged Peña Nieto to stop telling reporters that Mexico would not pay for the wall. For the sake of negotiations they should both simply say “we will work it out.”
In the call, Trump admits he has pushed himself into a corner regarding the wall, for two years he promised the American people Mexico would cover the tab for the wall and now its too late to back out. But far more interesting than Trump’s plea to Peña Nieto was the fact Trump didn’t even consider the wall a priority. While the talk consisted of imposing border tariffs and fighting the “bad hombres” driving the Mexican drug trade, it seemed like Trump didn’t really care to talk about the wall. In Trump’s words, “believe it or not, this is the least important thing that we are talking about.”
Looking at how well his wall proposal worked out, we could only imagine how well his new immigration proposal to cut down legal immigration by half will work out.
