Alejandro Toledo, the former president of Peru, last week became one of the most high-profile fugitives in the world. He is accused of having received $20 million in bribes from Odebrecht, the now infamous Brazilian company that appears to be spilling the beans about all the governments it corrupted in its vast overseas network. The sad irony is that no one expected this from Toledo, a once-humble economist who came to power pledging to end corruption after the sleaze of the government of former president/autocrat Alberto Fujimori. With investigations in Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela, the Odebrecht scandal teaches us that corruption in Latin America transcends ideologies, political parties, countries and, yes, even origins.
